Can i spray lacquer over polyurethane. I could spray shellack for the first few light coats for a even better adhesion then lacquer. Also Know how do you protect a lacquer. I never sprayed shellack but read that it can take lacquer well and sticks to de-glossed poly.
It will add resistance to spills and a bit of resistance to scratching. My experience is with lacquer only with great results. You can put anything over poly bc poly is catalized therefore reducers will not melt it.
Jim I can not imagine a problem with spraying lacquer over urethane I dont believe there is a compatibility issue at all. Stupid mistake - polyurethane and lacquer Poly over lacquer is ok lacquer over poly wont work because the thinners are to hot and they will melt the poly. That will work but lacquer over oil will result in an alligator finish.
Sound like a decent fix. If I were you I wouldnt even waste my time sanding. Of course you need to test in a inconspicuous place to be sure.
Polyurethane is a more durable coating. Instead use an alkyd varnish. The barrier has to be wax free shellac.
I feel more comfortable recoating a piece with lacquer than polyurethane. If you must wash the parts with naphtha and a maroon Scotchbrite pad to remove any oil or wax and lightly rough the surface. Second polyurethane is not the best choice for painting over lacquer finishes.

You cannot put anything catalyzed poly urethane etc over lacquer bc the lacquer has no catalyst therefore will be reflowed when the hot reducers catalyst hits itresulting in a list of potential problems.
But I wouldnt use a polyurethane varnish due to concerns about how well it will adhere. The safest thing to do is to use dewaxed shellac over the poly and then you can go to the lacquer without worry.
